Honestly, I have a love/hate relationship with shapewear. I usually don’t bother with shape-wear unless Im wearing an outfit that needs full on support. Which is usually under a dress for a special event. Let’s face it, we all have an uncomfortable shapewear story. They can roll up & down in the worst places making it a hassle. The satisfaction of ripping shape-wear undergarments off when I get home is unmatched.
On the other hand, 3kids later I do actually love the way it smoothes and shapes my body underneath clothing when Im feeling Self conscious & need a little extra support & especially as I’m working towards losing all of the quarantine weight.
Over the years, I’ve grown a bit wiser about my undergarment choices — and today, I’m sharing a few of my favorite tips from the hard lessons I learned when shopping for shape-wear.
1. Put them on properly
This may sound a bit obvious, but it really does make a difference how you put on your Spanx. Make sure your bottom is seated right in them (this is the most important bit). If your bottom isn’t “seated” in your Spanx, the fabric will start to drag down your body as the night goes on.
Once you have seated your bum, roll them up your body and adjust the hip area.
Then do the shapewear shuffle – really wiggle and move around to get your Spanx sitting in the right place on your body. This will REALLY help them to stay in place and not roll down.
2. Wash them properly
If you have a nice new pair of Spanx, treat them NICELY! It will last much longer and work much better.
What do I mean by nicely? Well, don’t yank them up your body as this will over stretch the fabric. Don’t machine wash them and never, ever tumble dry them. Not matter WHAT it says on the label. Dry them away from direct heat too. This will destroy all the stretchyness in them and THEY WILL ROLL DOWN ON YOU!
3. Opt for high waist.
I’m a huge fan of high waist anything, but especially when it comes to shapewear. Whether it’s briefs or bodyshorts, a high waist offers a great two for one deal that shapes and smooths your bottom and your mid-section. It’s a win-win!
At the end of the day Shapewear can be so tricky — the VPL struggle is real! I recommend going for high quality pieces with good return options so you can give them a test go without the commitment.
